Bumper Pad
I have taken the bumper pad out of the crib and now.......?
my 5 month old gets her arms and legs stuck between the bars when she rolls around. Well they are not really stuck but she doesn't know how to get them out herself, so to her she is stuck then she screams like crazy till someone comes to get her. Should I put the bumper pad back in the crib? I thought you take it out after they learn to roll so they won't suffocate? HELP?
no people i don't want her to break a limb but I also have heard so many stories about babies suffocating and I don't her to be one of them!
I took mine out after reading about all the possibilities of suffocation since my guy isn't rolling yet but does wiggle around. It took about 3 nights of me having to get up and pull him back from the bars to get his leg/arm unstuck before he figured it out himself. I've never heard of a baby breaking an arm or leg because they stuck it between the bars, do you realize how much force it would take to break a baby's soft flexible bones? The cartilage hasn't completely hardened yet so not likely she will be able to exert enough force to break anything. Make herself uncomfortable, maybe bruise the skin a bit I can see. However if you let her be she will learn, the trick is, she has to get her legs sticking out while she is awake so she doesn't wake up feeling trapped or scared. My guy likes to spend an hour or so in the morning before waking me up just playing in his crib, whether it's hand chewing or staring at stuff or kicking at his crib bars. In that time he has figured out how to put his hands/arms, feet/legs in and out of the bar openings. In fact yesterday morning I went in to get him and he was laying there with both legs dangling, swinging them back and forth as happy as can be.
However, if your child is able to roll front to back and back to front with no problems, the crib bumpers are not a suffocation hazard if tied properly and could mean you and her get a better nights sleep so follow your instincts. You know your daughter and how quickly she learns things, maybe she just needs to be shown that she can get her limbs out herself.
